How to trim or prune a tree

7/23/2020

First: evaluate if you can do it safely.

Thinking about doing some DIY and trimming your tree branches yourself? First, evaluate whether or not it's safe for you to do so. Here are some general guidelines:
  • Are the branches less than 2" in diameter? If so, sure, go ahead.
  • Are the branches 2-4" in diameter? If so, think it through. Can you really do this safely without injuring yourself, others, or property?
  • Are the branches greater than 4" in diameter? If so, contact an arborist. Call us at 408-676-2253.
Safety is the #1 priority you should have when trimming trees. Branches are heavier than you think and if cut improperly, can fall in a trajectory that you didn't expect.

If you can't reach the branches from the ground, call an arborist. If the branches are within range of utility/power wires, call your electric company and have them do the work.

OK. My branches are <4" in diameter and it's safe to do trim them myself.

  • Wear safety gear. Consult your local arborist for recommendations for safety gear.
  • Check your tools - if you're using a spring-loaded pruner, make sure it opens and closes smoothly and has sharp blades.
  • On the branch you'd like to cut, come out 12" or so (depending on how big the branch is). Start by making an undercut here.
  • Come out another 3" on the branch and make a top cut. This helps the branch come off cleanly and prevents tearing.
  • Cut off the remaining part of the branch right next to the trunk. Grab a hold of the branch while cutting to prevent any damage.

When should I trim or prune my trees?

Autumn or winter is a great time to trim or prune because the leaves have fallen off and you can better see some of the branches to be removed.
